Hillsdale is blessed with many beautiful local parks. Beechwood Park has sporting fields, a playground, and a lovely picnic area. Centennial Field encompasses 12 acres, and has lighted baseball diamonds and soccer fields, as well as a field house. Wood Dale County Park, on the eastern border of Hillsdale, has a bike path, playground, tennis courts, and lake fishing.
Additionally Hillsdale has excellent recreational facilities. The city has many sports leagues, including lacrosse and wrestling; and offers summer camps in the summer and ice skating in the winter. The Stony Brook Swim Club is a beautiful facility, with an Olympic sized swimming pool, as well as an intermediate pool, a diving pool, and a children’s pool.

for Hillsdale residents. Orchard Hills Golf Club in nearby Paramus, is the most convenient for Hillsdale residents. It offers a 9-hole course in a setting of a lush grove of trees; that can also be played as 18-holes.
The lower Hudson River is located within 10 miles of Hillsdale, and offers a bounty of outdoor activities, from kayaking and canoeing during the summer months, and skating in the winter. Hiking and biking are very popular along the river banks, and there are many historical sites in the Hudson River Valley that are popular with visitors from all over the region, and the nation.
Special Attractions/Events
One of Hillsdale’s major attractions is charm itself! The town has been restored and preserved with many one-of-a-kind features, including its quaint (and still functional) train station, an historic gazebo in the town center, and stone sidewalks with gas-lamp style streetlights. Hillsdale has many beautiful Victorians, and Dutch-influenced Colonial homes, one-of-a-kind shops, and popular local restaurants. As an added bonus, it is only a 30 minute drive to New York City, and a completely different world!
The Bergen Museum of Art and Science is located in the nearby town of Paramus. It has wonderful interactive science exhibits, and hosts an annual Art Festival. The Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood showcases the best in the performing arts, including performances by the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra.
Back in Hillsdale, community residents look forward to the open-air concerts performed in Beechwood Park during a “Music in the Park” festival held in the band shell every summer.
Other community events include Hillsdale Day, a festival with family-oriented games and a picnic, and the annual Fireman’s Pancake Breakfast. A highlight of autumn is a visit to Demarest Farms, on the west side of town, with apple orchards for apple picking, pumpkin fields, and old-fashioned hay rides. Pascack Valley families look forward to visiting the farm every fall.
Interesting Facts/Historic Buildings and Places
Pioneers from Holland were the first settlers of Hillsdale, and a Dutch architectural influence can be seen in some of the town’s older colonial homes.
The Hillsdale train station dates back to 1869, and is on both the New Jersey and the National Registers of Historic Places. The station is still functional, serving as a stop on New Jersey Transit’s Pascack Valley Line.
There was a railroad roundhouse at Hillsdale from the 1870’s until the 1930’s.
Steam locomotives were serviced here and routed to different tracks. Most of the housing built prior to World War II was for railroad employees.
There was a building boom after WWII, which accounts for much of the present-day housing in Hillsdale.

The total land area of Hillsdale NJ is 3 square miles. There are many streams that flow through the community, and a small part of Woodcliff Lake is also inside the borough.
Distance to New York City
New York City is the nearest large city, and Hillsdale is considered to be a bedroom community of New York. New York is 22.5 miles to the southeast. The following small communities are all within 5 miles of Hillsdale: Westwood, Woodcliff Lake, Washington Township, Park Ridge, River Vale, Emerson, Montvale, and Oradell, all part of the Pascack Valley of Bergen County.
